3D car dashboard and augmented reality scuba diving

April 25, 2009 · Posted in Augmented Reality · Comment

The germany based Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology gets a mention for being innovative. First off, they have taken augmented reality beneath the waves and applied it to scuba diving to make an immersive treasure hunt game. This is pretty clever, as my (minor) objection to mobile augmented reality is still in the fact that it requires me to wear glasses to experience it. but in scuba diving, the glasses are already a part of the experience.

Next up, is their use of 3D to create a personalised dashboard for in the car. This would be pretty cool. Imagine sitting at home, studying a city trip by car in Google Earth beforehand, learning the lay of the city by viewing the buildings on the Google Earth map. Next, you drive out to that city and get represented exactly what you saw earlier.

in contrast to their application of futuristic technology, they have an archaic linking policy, which i will now break, by linking to their…. linking policy (get a life guys, the internet exists because of the hyperlink.)

Herniated Disc and 3D animations

April 23, 2009 · Posted in Healthcare & Therapy, Training & Instruction · 1 Comment

I recently ended up in hospital for surgery on a herniated lumbar disc. The operation was succesfull and I am back home recovering. So, instead of using words to explain this, I have had a go at Googling for 3D animations to enlighten readers about this wonderfully painfull phenomena. And to my delight, there is quite alot out there.

Proper 3D rendering of the herniated disc

Good explanation, tho its actually a cartoon and not rendered 3D

Best explantion so far, including soothing background music

Now, thats all fine, but I havent actually found anything related to a 3D world and the treatment of spinal injuries. Anyone out there know of any virtual worlds with relevant content?

3D scene embeds easy as you tube

Nice way of embedding 3D into webpages as part of the rest of the content. I see a nice application as a basis for serving 3D advert campaigns onto high traffic websites. Expect to see 3D products exhibited along your blog and news websites. its by SceneCaster.

Virtual goods to real goods – Ridemakerz leaves beta

April 17, 2009 · Posted in Finance & Monetization, Gaming & Entertainment · Comment

I had a good few hours playing round in the Ridemakerz beta earlier this year and was pleased to see they had found a good example of going from custom virtual goods to custom physical goods.  Bottom line to this : Go into the online environment, play, and create the most amazing custom car you can think of, and then get it delivered to your doorstep.

Exit Reality, enter 3D website

April 8, 2009 · Posted in 3D Platforms, Finance & Monetization · Comment

I caught ExitReality through a broadcast on Life On Line,  a web based, avatar hosted talkshow about all things virtual. Danny Stephanic explains in the next video how it works. As usual, you will need to install a plugin, and so far it only works with my Internet Explorer and Firefox, even tho im a Google Chrome user by nature. (Wil it work on other OS’s besides Windows I wonder?)

After viewing tothport.nl through this browser I got to see a 3D space, filled with little signposts – Each signpost representing a link in the sites frontpage. I will have to play around with it more to see if I can get my site to look anywhere near usable in 3D using this technology, but its definately got my attention now, as it brings 3D to web by transforming existing 2D content.

Virtual Goods Equal Real Hard Cash

April 6, 2009 · Posted in Finance & Monetization · Comment

The value of goods ALWAYS depends on their perceived value. Though there is probably a good application for gold, i can not remember a moment in my life where i was thinking ‘Gosh, i wish i had an ounce of gold now to solve this or that problem.’
The value of precious metals is based on their rarity. I dont care for it, many people do. But then that is what value is all about; the value we attach to them, not the actual monetary, physical value they represent at for instance a scrapyard.

The same for virtual goods. Goods that get produced, traded, admired, worn and applied inside virtual worlds. Yes, in the end its only a bunch of bits and bytes that have their glory moment on your computer screen, but people are attaching value to these product more and more. They help you to adorn your virtual home, dress you up for that party or help you to defeat that dragon by providing a healing shield in an online 3D game.
